Objectives

The students will learn the theoretical foundations and practical approach to advanced statistical methods used in clinical research, assessment of technologies and health service research. After this course unit the students should be able to: identify the correct statistical methodology for data analysis; apply these methods using statistical software; interpret the results of the statistical methods.

Learning outcomes and competences

After this course unit the students should be able to: identify the correct statistical methodology for data analysis; apply these methods using statistical software; interpret the results of the statistical methods.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

The students should be familiar with the basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics.

Program

Review of basic statistical concepts; multiple linear regression; logistic regression; survival analysis; model building; model selection; model diagnosis; analysis of correlated data; analysis of measurement agreement; probabilistic graphical models.

Mandatory literature

Principles of Biostatistics; Marcello Pagano, Kimberlee Gauvreau, Duxbury/Thomson Learning, 2000
Michael J. Campbell; Statistics at Square Two: Understanding Modern Statistical Applications in Medicine. 2nd Edition , BMJ Books , 2006

Complementary Bibliography

David G. Kleinbaum; Lawrence L. Kupper; Keith E. Muller; Azhar Nizam; Applied Regression Analysis and Multivariable Methods, Duxbury Press, 1997
David W. Hosmer and Stanley Lemeshow; Applied Logistic Regression Analysis, Willey -Interscience, 2000
David Collett; Modelling Survival Data in Medical Research, Chapman & Hall, 2003

Teaching methods and learning activities

After the presentation of each topic there will be time to solve practical exercises using statistical software. An e-learning platform will be used to deliver class notes and to facilitate the communication between students and teaching staff.
