The purpose of decision analysis in health and medicine is to answer diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive or prognostic clinical questions through the integration of the best clinical evidence available and the adequate use of specific methodologies of decision analysis. This course aims to give the adequate theoretical foundations and practical guidance for the interpretation, design and implementation of clinical decision analysis and cost-effectiveness studies.
At the end of this course, students should be able to: analyse decision processes in health and medicine; interpret and evaluate results; design and interpret cost-effectiveness studies and clinical decision analysis studies and apply and understand statistical sensitivity analysis and probabilistic uncertainty analysis.
Clinical Decision Analysis: Methods of decision analysis; decision-trees; integration of diagnostic tests in decision analysis; valuation, utilities and QALY’s; probability and uncertainty; sensitivity analysis; modelling in clinical decision analysis – Markov models and Monte-Carlo simulation; Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: costs – definitions and quantification; effectiveness – valuation of health outcomes; cost-effectiveness analysis; adjusting, preferences and discounting; probability and uncertainty; sensitivity analysis; cost-effectiveness modelling.

Students may only be admitted to the final exam if they a 4 or above mark in the continuous assessment.
Continuous assessment (10 marks) – It covers the assessment of the student’s participation in the teaching and learning process of the course and it will be based on practical individual assignments.
Theoretical exam (10 marks) – Students may only be admitted to the final exam if they a 4 or above mark in the continuous assessment. The exam covers the theoretical content of the program of the course, consisting of: (a) closed answer, multiple-choice and simple open questions (b) short answer questions and (c) numerical problems.
Final assessment: Upon approval on the course, the final grade will be the sum of the marks obtained on the continuous assessment and on the theoretical exam.
There is no special assignments.
