Objectives

We consider a priority in the Medical curriculum the presence of a study area covering the assessment of abnormal behavior and emotional / afective pathology as well as the skill for diagnosing and treating mental disorders. Other objective would be the learning the somatic expression of psychiatric ilness and psychological reaction of seroius somatic disorders in a holistis approach to human suffering. Learnig will be made through seminars, open to discussion, supervised clinical sessions next to the patient and the elaboration of a short monography were the basic skills in Clinical Psychiatry will be tought. The existence of the practical sessions through the wards and the emergency service, together with the theoretical-practical discussion, allows the student to acquire a general attitude of considering the patient as totally integrated psychosomatic being and anticipating a specific overall view of an individual patient integrating the psychosocial assessment in the sense of true Modern Medicine.

Learning outcomes and competences

From 8.30 to 12.00 h = practical sessions - 3.5 hours. Between 12.00 and 13.00 h the students attend a theoretical seminar - 1.00 hours. From 14.00 to 16.00 the students participate in a theoretical-practical seminar – 2h00 hours.

In the practical sessions, presentations and clinical discussions of in-ward and out-patient as well as patients from the day hospital and emergency room are made with active participation, “residence type”. The thematic contents of the lecturers and seminars are:
Causality in Psychiatry. Psychiatric semiology. Doctor-patient relationship in Psychiatry. Complementary exams of a psychological nature: psychometrical tests and assessment scales; of somatic nature: biochemistry, endocrinology, neurophysiology and neuroimaging. Anxiety disturbances (phobic-anxiety, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, reaction to serious stress, adjustment and dissociate behaviour). Humour disturbances (affective). Schizophrenia, Esquizotype and delirious disturbances. Personality disturbances. The psychosomatic perspective in Medicine. The somatoform disturbances and their importance in general practice. Mental disturbances and current behaviour of psychoactive substances (alcohol - illicit substances). The non-chemical dependencies: disturbances of habits and impulses. Drug abuse and rehabilitation. Alimentary behaviour disturbances - nervous anorexia and bulimia. Human sexual behavior. Sexual dysfunction, disturbances of sexual identity, of sexual preferences and of behavior associated with the development and sexual orientations. The parafilias. Organic mental disturbances (delirium, insanity, mental disturbances and other cognitive disturbances). The symptomatic and toxic disturbances in general. Clinic psychopharmacology; The new therapeutic orientations in Psychiatry. Psychosocial aspects of human aging. Psychogeriatrics. Community psychiatry. Psychiatric rehabilitation and day-hospital. Forensic Psychiatry. Mental health and compulsive internment. Law no. 36 of 24.07.98.

All students will be evaluated for its residency in Psychiatry and Mental Health Service of FMUP being of valuing the assiduity and punctuality.

Calculation formula of final grade

Objective assessment (multiple choice test). Values higher than 17.5 may demand an oral examination, unless the students don't want grade improvement (in this case the student will have 18 = 17.5). Presence and pontuality of the student will be taken into account.
Requirement to attend classes, seminars and consultations is in accordance to the Falculty of Medicine, UPorto.
