Objectives

To show the students the extent of the eye specialists' professional performance. To stimulate the choice for a professional career as an eye specialist by the students who feel a vocation for the scientific-professional area of Ophthalmology.

Learning outcomes and competences

Basic notions that allows future doctors to contribute to the screening, diagnosis and treatment of the main ocular diseases.

Program

The program develops through nine thematic groups. Each thematic group is concerned with an ocular pathology or group of pathologies that are the foundation of the sub-specialties of the modern Ophthalmology. Trying to introduce the theme for a lecture at the beginning of a day, to allow the student to make direct contact with the pathology and with the multiplicity of the disease approaches in medicine and laboratorial practices, and in a practical session performed latter in the day, the student is stimulated to discuss in a group what he/she has had the opportunity to observe and to question the Assistant Professor about subjects raised by the daily activity. The theme is expected to integrate the teaching/learning process, the theoretical knowledge with the main attitudes and specific Ophthalmologic skills.

Thematic groups and objectives to pursue: 1. To know how to measure the visual acuity and to interpret the meaning of the loss of visual acuity; 2. Observing a red eye, to know how to distinguish between a trivial ocular irritation and a serious disease with potential of blindness; 3. To know that glaucoma does not give signs or symptoms in the initial phase and that it develops to blindness if not treated. Sensitisation for early diagnosis; 4. To know how to recognize a squint and understand the mechanisms of the amblyopia. Have cognisance that the amblyopia is only curable in the first years of life; 5. To know that congenital cataract is a cause of amblyopia. In the adult, the cataract has only surgical treatment and the opportunity for the surgery is to be decided by the patient; 6. To know how to observe the ocular funds and to recognize the fundoscopic manifestations of systemic and neurological pathology, taking cognisance that the eye specialist has other means of observing the funds besides direct ophthalmoscopy; 7. To know how to recognize the main ocular manifestations of neurological and systemic diseases; 8. To know that an early diagnosis of ocular tumors is an indispensable condition to avoid blindness and to protect the patient’s life; 9. To know how to act in the case of an ophthalmologic emergency.
