To promote a critical view that will both facilitate the learning and application of rules adequate for the rational selection and prescription of drugs. Therapeutics has an essentially formative background, aimed at the acquisition of skills to allow the correct use of drugs and also the practice of pedagogical interventions in health education. It is well known that the patients´ education, in their relationship with therapeutics, has important outcomes even in the improvement of compliance.
Rational therapy
Medicament – development, regulation and sources of information; clinical pharmacology and clinical trials; pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics; pharmacoepidemiology; pharmacoeconomy. Analgesic and antinflammatory drug therapy; therapeutics of inflammatory diseases; antiosteoporotic therapy; general basis of immunosuppressant therapy; therapeutics of pain; physical and rehabilitation medicine. Therapeutics of neoplastic diseases; cytostatic and cytotoxic therapy. Therapeutics of disorders of the central nervous system; anxiolitics and hypnotics; antidepressants; antipsychotics; antiepileptics; antidemential; antiparkinsonian; hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder drug therapy. Therapeutics of cardiovascular disorders; antihypertensives; heart failure drug therapy; antiaggregant, anticoagulant and fibrinolytic therapy; antiarrhythmics; antidiabetics; antidislipidemics. Therapeutics of gastrointestinal disorders; peptic ulcer and gastroesophagic reflux drug therapy; inflammatory bowel disease drug therapy; constipation and diarrhoea drug therapy. Therapeutics of pulmonary disorders; antiasthmatics; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease drug therapy; cystic fibrosis drug therapy; antitussives and expectorants. Drug therapy in special populations; the elderly; the terminal patient; renal failure patients; the pregnant woman; childreen. The classes are organized in blocks: 8 blocks of 3 weeks each. In each block, 6 hour sessions: 4 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. The classes are constituted by seminars and theoretical-practical or practical sessions. The practical classes involve prescription training accordingly to clinical cases and group discussions.

The students have to participate in 2/3 (or more) of the practical sessions. There will be a written test at the end of each block. Independent of achievement on the exam at the end of the block and as to having passed or not, the students are always allowed to perform the exam in July, and can, still request an oral exam. The students have to reach an average of, at least, 9.5 in the written test or 10 in the oral exam.
