Objectives

Provide competence in the execution neurological examination and in the understanding of the clinical picture of patients with Nervous System and Muscle disorders leading to the recognition the neurological syndromes that, together with clinical history, provides skills for an appropriate diagnosis
To provide the knowledge about the most frequent disorders of the Nervous System in the general population (based on international guidelines).

Knowledge about less frequent disorders deserving recognition in order to provide an appropriate orientation

Learning outcomes and competences

Evaluation of patients througth medical history, general and neurological examination.

Summary of the most relevant data in order to set the neurological syndrome and to propose an etiologic diagnosis based  on obtained data and on the knowledge about the most important diseases of nervous system and muscle.

Neurological Syndromes

Stroke

Epilepsy

Headache

Coma and Dementia

Disorders of rachis

Cranioencephalic trauma

Neuromuscular disorders

Inflammatory and demyelinating disorders

Brain tumors

Pediatric neurosusgery

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Knowledge about neuroanatomy and about general semiology and minimal neurological examination.

Program

Review of signs and symptoms of the nervous system diseases and most important neurological syndromes: Hemispheric, Brainstem, Cranial nerves Spinal cord. Movement disorders, Neuromuscular disorders (with an reference to electromyography and and most important disorders), coma, delirium, dementia. headaches.

Common disorders: Cerebrovascular disorders (seminar), Spine disorders (seminar), Epilepsy with special reference to electroencephalography and evoked potentials (seminar) and craniocerebral trauma (integrated module of lectures and clinical practice)

Less common disorders requiring an immediate treatment:intracranial hypertension and brain tumor, acute inflammatory polyneuropathy and myastenia gravis)

Less common disorders but important in particular ages and requiring an appropiate orientation: Demyeilinating disorders (multiple sclerosis as the most common neurological disorders of the young adults, particular reference to lumbar puncture), and lateral amyotrophic sclerosis
