Objectives

The main objectives of the proposed curricular unit are the teaching of Medical Microbiology. We consider fundamental to promote the development of new mental structures, capacities and new attitudes that may provide students the ability needed to analyze and solve problems. Different competencies should be acquired by the medical students:

Basic competencies: learn how to learn, to know;

Transversal competencies: learn how to cooperate, to behave;

Specific competencies: learn how to do (specific objectives).

Competences: To understand the basics and diagnostic strategies in Medical Microbiology. To integrate microbial virulence attributes and pathogenicity mechanisms.

To know how to select and/or to apply correctly the distinct methods of antisepsis and sterilization.

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus content covers the most relevant topics at present in medical microbiology. Taken together with the proposed activites, in particular the discussion of case problems , it will be possible at the end of the semester to integrate the proposed topics and to discuss comprehensive solutions to the different case problems . Conclusion of the planned activities, including the lab training, is expected to ensure the acquisition of the expected competences.

Working method

Program

Bacteriology - Morphology and bacterial ultrastructure. Growth and bacterial death. Culture of microorganisms. Metabolism and bacterial genetics.

Mycology - Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy of the fungi.

Parasitology - Morphology, life cycle and pathogenic actions of the main protozoa and metazoa parasites of man;

Virology - Physiochemical characteristics and biological study of the viruses.

Mechanisms of microbial virulence and pathogeneicity versus host defenses.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The proposed formation activities, involving theoretical and practical formation, plus active student participation in the solution of case-problems in a tutorial regimen, complemented with individual study will provide medical students a comprehensive perspective of the intricate involvement of medical microbiology in all fields of clinical medicine.
