Objectives

To know the indications and contraindications of the radiological studies; to acquire basic concepts of radiologic semiology.

Program

Introduction: diagnosis by means of imaging, physics principles, image processing, introduction to imaging techniques and modalities (e.g., computed tomography [CT] and magnetic resonance [MR]), environmental radiation, risks in radiological examinations, principles of radiation protection and legislation.
Neuroradiology: imaging modalities; topics in neuroanatomy; pathologies involving the brain or skull (vascular diseases, trauma, neoplasia, infections, hydrocephalus, neurodegenerative and white matter diseases); pathologies involving the spine (degenerative disc disease, facet arthropathy, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, trauma, neoplasia); pathologies involving the spinal cord (multiple sclerosis, vascular abnormalities, trauma, neoplasia); congenital abnormalities.
Head and neck radiology: imaging modalities; anatomy; pathologies of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, orbits, and temporal bones; other heath and neck pathologies; examples of systemic diseases involving the heath and neck.
Pulmonary radiology: imaging modalities, anatomy and physiology, lung diseases (pneumonia, neoplasia, tuberculosis, pneumoconiosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism and infarction), pleural diseases.
Cardiac radiology: imaging modalities (e.g., CT coronary angiography, CT and MR angiography of the supraaortic vessels), anatomy and physiology, diseases of the heart and great vessels (congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, acquired valvular disease, pericardial effusion, aortic dissection, aneurysms, congenital abnormalities).
Breast radiology: imaging modalities, anatomy and pathology, breast cancer screening.
Abdominal radiology: imaging modalities, peptic ulcer disease, neoplasia, diverticulosis, regional enteritis and granulomatous colitis, ulcerous colitis, liver and biliary tract disorders (e.g., lithiasis and acute cholecystitis), spleen diseases, neoplasia and systemic diseases involving the liver and spleen, pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasia, pneumoperitoneum, abscesses, acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, volvulus and intussusception.
Pelvic and urogenital radiology: imaging modalities, anatomy and physiology, imaging in obstetrics and gynecology, pelvic masses, urinary lithiasis, neoplasia and renal cystic disease, tuberculosis, renovascular hypertension, kidney transplantation, prostatic and scrotal pathology, trauma.
Osteoarticular and muscular radiology: imaging modalities; anatomy and physiology; congenital, infectious, neoplastic, inflammatory, metabolic, traumatic, and vascular diseases.
Vascular and interventional radiology: basic concepts.

Teaching methods and learning activities

30 hrs / week; lectures focusing on the previously mentioned contents; practical sessions including discussion of case reports.

Eligibility for exams

Test consisting of 10 questions plus identification of 7 images; classification from score 0 to score 20, approval requiring at least score 10.
