Abstract (EN): A theoretical study is described of the problem of mass transfer between an "active" cylinder and the fluid flowing around it in the interstices of a packed bed of inert particles, the fluid velocity being everywhere perpendicular to the cylinder axis. The theoretical treatment of the problem is analogous to that presented in Part II1 for flow around spheres, and the importance of transverse dispersion in determining the rate of mass transfer is again emphasised. Experimental data are reported for the sublimation of naphthalene cylinders with diameters of 12.1 and 20.0 mm, immersed in beds of glass spheres with diameters of 0.205, 0.460 and 1.04 mm. The experimental data compare well with the predictions of the theory even though the theory was developed for flow in an unbound packed bed. The correction needed to account for the finite character of the packed bed used in the experiments is estimated.
