Abstract (EN):
The paper is concerned with transverse dispersion in beds of particles and related phenomena. A novel experimental technique is described for the determination of transverse dispersion coefficients and application of this technique is illustrated for the systems: naphthalene vapour-air and benzoic acid-water. More than 80 experimental values of the dispersion coefficient were obtained in beds of closely sized particles. An analysis of the mechanism of dispersion was made which suggests the existence of upper and lower bounds. The study of mass transfer between wall and fluid in the packed bed emphasises the need to account for a 'wall resistance' in some conditions. A simple model is developed to this effect.
