Abstract (EN): This paper try to discuss what is the pertinence of studying a small Portuguese port like Aveiro, adopting a methodology proposed by Gordon Jackson, who proposes lines of research around the study of the “status of small ports”. This justifies a microanalysis of a minor port’s strategic contribution to the progressive construction of an economic space, whether local, national or international. In this essay we will therefore examine the importance of the port’s hinterland in the context of the national and regional economy); assess the justification for investments in harbour engineering and docks works, and evaluate the importance of the creation of ideological guidelines which promoted the free free port as an agent for the rise of Aveiro and other small Portuguese ports.
