Abstract (EN): The synthesis of diethylacetal via SMBR technology is the first known process that uses an SMB-based technology for the production and separation of acetal, a green diesel additive, by means of acid ion-exchange resins acting as catalyst/adsorbent. While still at pilot stage, the process has already been extended for the synthesis of 1,1-dimethoxyethane-9,10 and is now being studied for other potential additives and different operating schemes. The process, while still at pilot stage, is already patented, and the University of Porto is currently negotiating with potential technology partners for commercialization.
