Resumo (PT): O ciberjornalismo português tarda a afirmar-se. Depois de uma corrida desenfreada para a Internet no final do século XX, e de uma debandada ainda mais rápida logo a seguir, investidores e jornalistas parecem estar (eternamente) à espera das condições ideais para voltar a apostar no jornalismo feito no e para o novo meio. Nesta investigação, medi e comparei as potencialidades da Internet exploradas pelos ciberjornais portugueses de informação geral de âmbito nacional. Para o conseguir, criei e apliquei uma tabela de medição dos níveis de aproveitamento da hipertextualidade, multimedialidade, interactividade, memória, instantaneidade, ubiquidade, personalização, hipermedialidade e contextualização. A tabela foi construída de forma a poder ser aplicada novamente, ao mesmo universo ou a qualquer outro, o que permitirá estabelecer comparações em diferentes momentos e entre ciberjornais de diferentes tipos, países e públicos-alvo. O resultado da aplicação da tabela foi, globalmente, o esperado, com níveis médios de aproveitamento de 23,3%, valor que baixa para os 18% com o alargamento da análise à exploração de potencialidades múltiplas a partir dos mesmos serviços ou dispositivos. A análise em detalhe permitiu constatar diferenças de comportamento, porventura menos esperadas, por parte de ciberjornais de diferentes media de origem, bem como alguma atenção dada a algumas potencialidades em contraste com um quase desprezo por outras. A aplicação da tabela foi complementada com entrevistas a directores de ciberjornais de título exclusivamente online e a investigadores e observadores do ciberjornalismo português, com o objectivo de tentar perceber as razões do fraco aproveitamento das potencialidades da Internet. As conclusões não são definitivas, mas levantam algumas pistas, muito centradas na falta de investimento associada à escassez de receitas. Fica por saber se a maiores investimentos, em meios humanos e técnicos, corresponderão melhores aproveitamentos das potencialidades da Internet.

Abstract (EN): Portuguese cyberjournalism is slow in affirming itself. After an immoderate rush to the Internet by the end of the twentieth century, and an even quicker retreat shortly thereafter, investors and journalists alike seem to be (perpetually) waiting for the ideal conditions to wager again on journalism made in and to the new medium. In this research I have gauged and compared the potentialities of Internet explored by national scope general information Portuguese cyberjournals. To achieve this aim I built a gauging chart to ascertain the levels of hipertextuality, multimediality, interactivity, memory, immediacy, ubiquity, personalization, hipermediality and contextualization put to good use. Such a chart was made up so as to allow it to be applied once again, to the same universe or any other, which will permit to establish comparisons at different moments and between cyberjournals of different types, countries and target publics. The overall outcome of the gauging chart survey met the expectations, with average levels of 23.3% of potentialities put to good use, a figure that drops to 18% if the survey widens to include the use of multiple potentialities from the same services or devices. Detail analysis revealed some less anticipated performance disparities from cyberjournals of different media of origin. Further, it showed that some attention was given to particular potentialities in opposition to a quasi-neglect of others. The gauging chart survey was supplemented by interviews with directors of exclusively online cyberjournals, and with researchers and observers of the Portuguese cyberjournalism, with a view to try and ascertain the reasons responsible for the low rate of application of the Internet potentialities. The conclusions are not definitive, but they open some research tracks, strongly based on lack of investment coupled with shortage of revenue. It remains unanswered whether larger investments (human and technical assets) would result in higher applications of the Internet potentialities.
