Details
Summary: The BBAI project focuses on the detection and mitigation of impaired conditions of psychomotor
efficiency in the context of driving vehicles, such as fatigue, stress, cognitive load, and distraction,
responsible for more than 90% of road accidents, with an estimated cost of hundreds of billions
of euros per year. Distraction is the biggest cause of accidents in the world, followed by falling
asleep, and only then does speeding, excess alcohol and others occur. On the other hand, stress
and cognitive load are responsible for aggressive and inattentive driving, causing an increased risk
to car traffic and a health risk, so informing the driver about his condition becomes critical.
While behaviour such as alcohol or speeding is possible to quantify and measure with own equipment
and, consequently, to monitor and prevent other behaviour, such as those described above, is still
not sufficiently analysed, being therefore currently difficult to prevent.
In this context, the BBAI project aims at research and innovation in the development of
artificial intelligence algorithms capable of identifying, through visual computing, physiological and
psychological states dangerous to driving, using state-of-the-art techniques for collecting and
marking data collected in a real and simulated driving environment. All algorithms developed during
the project will be put to the test in the field through a Healthyroad mobile application.
The BBAI project is promoted by four complementary entities, namely Polygon, Faculdade de
Engenharia do Porto (FEUP), Instituto de Construção (IC) and FMUP/CINTESIS (Faculdade de
Medicina da Universidade do Porto / Centro de Investigação em Tecnologias e Serviços de Saúde).
