Details
Summary: Safety of synthetic turf fields that use crumb rubber from recycled tires is raising concerns about the presence and release of toxic substances. In early 2017, ECHA preliminary studies suggested some evidences of these health concerns, and urged for additional research to address the existent knowledge gaps. This project intends to: (i) provide additional data for risk assessment (PAHs levels in rubber crumb from tires of different origins, exposure patterns in extreme conditions; mass balances through the two existing processes ? ambient grinding and cryogenic) and (ii) improve safety of synthetic turf, lowering PAHs concentration by a final treatment with hot-air fluidized bed. Providing a technological approach to improve the safety of the rubber crumb will therefore embody the pursuit of a cleaner environment hand-in-hand with a sustainable industry and boost the mission of science and technology to help solving the current societal challenges.
