The Instituto de Filosofia (IF) of the University of Porto (UP) is an established Research Unit with activities in various domains of philosophy. The IF holds full autonomy in defining its research program and its activities, as well as in the use of the available funding. It is located at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (FLUP), which has the responsibility of managing the funds, according to the rules of public service, funding authorities and the University of Porto.
In 2008-2012 the IF has been arranged into three research areas (Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval; Gabinete de Filosofia Moderna e Contemporânea; Gabinete de Filosofia da educação), comprising 12 research groups. It has had, on average per year, 51 member researchers (PhDs) affiliated with 6 universities and 3 polytechnics, as well as about 60 Master and Doctoral student researchers and 100 Collaborating researchers.
The projects, publications, involvement in graduate teaching and multidisciplinary partnerships place the IF in a high ranked position concerning research in philosophy, this being acknowledged both national and internationally. In the three research assessments carried out by FCT to date, the IF was classified as Excellent.
The IF is led by the conviction that Philosophy and research in philosophy are an indispensable contribution to the understanding of great issues regarding humanity and society. The IF is thus committed to sharing its research through its research groups, projects and members, through partnerships and networks, and through collaboration with other institutions.
Since its establishment in 1996 the IF has been constituted by three main research areas or 'Gabinetes': Gabinete de Filosofia da Educação (GFE), Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval (GFM), Gabinete de Filosofia Moderna e Contemporânea (GFMC). According to its statutes (revised in 2011), the Institute has a DIRECTOR, who is the scientific coordinator, an EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (elections have taken place in March 2010), a SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL (gathering all Principal Investigators responsible for the approval of research activities and funding of the RG), the ASSEMBLY OF RESEARCHERS (all PhDs, with advisory functions), and a BOARD OF ADVISERS (each one of the 3 advisers being direct consultants of one of the three Thematic Lines and its research projects).
The IF has as its major characteristic the autonomy of the PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS (the directors of the 12 RG).
They are responsible for the scientific and financial management of their groups and their activities. The Principal Investigators are also in charge of promoting accountability within the Institute. Internal reports about ongoing research projects and other activities are also their responsibility.
The Institute's WEBSITE (http://ifilosofia.up.pt) is the public face of our activities and research commitments. It provides information about all the Institute's activities and serves as a medium of communication between the RG.
