h. Supporting the evaluation and internal peer-??review of funding applications and research proposals, in order to
ensure adequate quality standards.
(2) To be a relevant national and international player and partner in the area of translational, clinical and health services
research, fostering national and international networking, aiming to maximize the use of local resources and the impact
of the scientific knowledge and technology produced.
(3) To be a relevant national and international player and partner in consortia with healthcare industrial partners and
SMEs.
(4) To be an important service provider for the community, healthcare institutions, healthcare industry and SMEs. In
particular, CINTESIS aims to provide external consultancy services in research methods, biostatistics and information
systems and to provide services associated with development and management of research and information
infrastructures (e.g. data management and databases).
(5) To facilitate and promote knowledge transfer, by actively pursuing the practical clinical application of the scientific
knowledge and technology produced and the creation and development of patents, spin-offs/star-ups and other
initiatives allowing commercial or
industrial applications.
(6) To develop outreach activities, aiming to increase the awareness and educate the general public regarding the
main subject areas of each of the four thematic lines.
(7) To facilitate and promote, within its research groups, the collaboration and communication with health authorities
and health policy-makers, in order to maximize the impact of the scientific knowledge produced.
A vision for the future of CINTESIS
The future of CINTESIS will first include a consolidation phase where all the research groups in the four thematic lines
will accommodate their new structures. In a second phase, CINTESIS will foster the development and growth of all
research groups, and particularly the newly created. This second phase will include the continued training of young
researchers, the inclusion of new integrated members, and the continuing facilitation of national and international
collaborations, particularly in consortia with the healthcare industry and SMEs and in multinational academic consortia
aiming to obtain EU
funding.
A. Planned research activities
The planned research activities are in accordance with the major goals of the Horizon 2020 framework program, which
are in close relation with the four thematic lines of CINTESIS ? TL1-Clinical & Health Services Research, TL2-Ageing
& Neurosciences Research, TL3-Diagnosis, Disease & Therapeutics Research and TL4-Data & Methods Research.
A summary of the main goals of each thematic line and the planned research activities for each research group may
be consulted in the following sections of this proposal.
It is important to stress some of the main strategic planned research:
a. Large multinational and multicentre observational studies, fostering international collaborations and inclusion in EU
funded projects (e.g. in critical care and emergency medicine, oncology, cardiovascular and ageing cohorts);
b. Creation and development of biomarkers and innovative diagnostic technologies, with particular emphasis in ageing,
degenerative diseases and oncology;
c. Research and development in the area of evidence based medicine and research synthesis;
d. Research and development of new quantitative methodologies and biostatistics, particularly focusing on big and
complex data, statistical machine learning, artificial intelligence and meta-analysis.
B. Advanced education
Regarding the advanced education activities CINTESIS will continue in the future to consolidate the ongoing PhD,
MSc and continuing education programs, as previously described, and will be promoting the creation of advanced
education initiatives in new and emerging areas of knowledge, in order to foster the update and upgrade of skills and
knowledge of its education programs and unit members.
The main focus will continue to be in the improvement and internationalization of all the advanced education programs
under CINTESIS, and particularly the core PhD programs more closely dependent on CINTESIS members.
