Summary: |
This project aims to study the electrodialysis/electrolysis of NaCl for the production of Cl2 and NaOH using cation exchange membranes (Nafion).
From the early 80's, since the beginning of this technology, that almost there are no studies on the electrodialysis of NaCl for the production of Cl2 and NaOH (the chlor-alkali process), as is shown from a literature survey on the main scientific data bases.
Electrodialysis is the state-of the-art technology, but mercury and diaphragm cell technologies are still used. In the Europe the capacity is mainly mercury cell technology but after 2011 its use should be strongly restricted.
One of the aims of this project is to identify the critical factors related with the electrodialysis productivity (energy costs minimization and increase the life time of the membranes) and develop simple methods to control the membranes quality. Finally, this study intends to develop strategic knowledge in CUF-Químicos Industriais to improve its autonomy and its negotiation ability. |
