INSURANCE MEDICINE is the application of the theoretical and practical knowledge of clinical medicine, public health, occupational/preventive medicine and legal medicine to the world of private insurance (life and non-life) and social insurance, adapting its practices to the legal, jurisprudential and contractual specificities of each context.
Undergraduate university training in the areas of health does not address the issue of insurance medicine and, in Portugal, there has been no postgraduate training in this area to date. As a result, health professionals, particularly doctors, who work for insurance companies, have the only training that results from their daily practice, and do not have specific academic training to prepare them for professional practice in this area of health intervention. However, the lack of specific know-how, particularly in the legal field, preventing an adequate and necessary intersection between medicine and law, could lead to difficulties in daily practice. In addition, the lack of specific academic preparation could hinder the achievement of the best results in this area of activity. What is expected is that, in general, these professionals will be able to promote the prevention of certain diseases and accidents, guarantee the excellence of medical and surgical treatments, the rehabilitation and reintegration of patients, as well as their correct and fair final expert assessment. However, this is still a growing area of health care, which is why it is important to invest in it, which will involve an effort to systematize all the knowledge that already exists, but which is still very dispersed.
The course's OBJECTIVES are: (1) To help develop or improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes, in a structured way, of health professionals, with a particular focus on doctors, who work or may work in insurance companies, whether in the area of prevention, medical-surgical, rehabilitation/reintegration, forensics or prediction; (2) To raise awareness and encourage these professionals to get involved in scientific research activities in this area.
