Basic Course of 24 hour ambulatory Blood pressure monitoring and of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity

InformationThe course/CS does not admit students in 2023/2024.
Basic Course of 24 hour ambulatory Blood pressure monitoring and of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity is now considered an indispensable technique in the rigorous assessment of patients with suspected or confirmed hypertension. Among all forms of blood pressure measurement, ABPM has the highest predictive value for cardiovascular risk and is the ideal technique for the diagnosis of white coat hypertension and masked hypertension. Proper interpretation of the data it provides requires knowledge of its potential, clinical indications and limitations, as well as validation and fitting of available devices.

Pulse wave velocity is a non-invasive technique for assessing aortic stiffness that is easy to perform, has good reproducibility and validity, and is inexpensive. Aortic stiffness thus assessed is a robust marker of cardiovascular target organ damage and a very accurate indicator of cardiovascular and renal prognosis, allowing therapeutic guidance in hypertensive patients. For these reasons, recent guidelines (Hypertension Guidelines ESH/ESC 2018) recommend its use as a clinical marker of cardiovascular target organ damage and as an integrated marker of atherosclerotic disease. The technical requirements for its realization are affordable and quick to acquire.
