Objectives

Aquisition of competences (knowledegment +, attitudes ++. skills +++) that enable basic clinical performance in Surgery.

Learning outcomes and competences

To accomplish the tasks related to semiology, pathology, practice and generic therapeutic principles of essential entities (frequent and/or relevant) in Surgery.

The competencies to be developed/consolidated (until 28 itens) have different degrees of acquisition/completion (1 to 5):

The following themes (substantially apprenticeship-based) are addressed:



General Surgery:
 

Acute abdomen; Peritonites; The patient with dysphagia; Jaundice; Biliary lithiasis; Gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia; Peptic ulcer (complications); Neoplasms: esophagus, gastric, colon, rectum, liver, biliary tract, pancreas, breast, thyroid, head and neck; Thyroid nodule; The patient with digestive bleeding (high and low); Inflammatory bowel disease; Colon diverticular disease; Benign anorectal pathology; Polyps and polyposis; The patient with diarrhea or constipation; Abdominal wall hernias; The patient with involuntary weight loss; Morbid obesity; Trauma.


Pediatric Surgery: vomiting in infancy, acute abdominal pain, UTI and urinary malformations; cervical, inguinal and umbilical swellings. Plastic Surgery: treatment and reconstruction of traumatic, congenital and oncological pathologies; treatment of burns; wounds. Vascular Surgery: peripheral arterial disease (acute and chronic ischemia); extracranial cerebrovascular disease; chronic venous disease of the lower limbs; venous thromboembolism; aneurysmal disease of the aorta. Cardio-Thoracic Surgery: coronary syndromes; valvular heart disease; vascular diseases of the aortas; pleural and mediastinal disorders. Anesthesiology: perioperative assessment of the surgical patient; intra and postoperative monitoring; pain management; technical gestures. Stomatology: Oral pathology and oncology. Craniofacial growth and development; Stomatology emergencies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Pedagogical modalities: Seminars- 20 hours; Internship- 113 hours. The clinical training (predominant, takes place in the host institution, with full integration in the healthcare team of the different department/divisions: awards, office visits, operative room, day surgery, "internal residence" and emergency. It is supervised clinical practice with a ratio tutor:student(s) of 1:1 or 1:2. It also includes participation in department meetings and integration into research activities.

Organization: Modular (5 weeks - 9 ECTS, 234 hours of student work) that corresponds to 133 hours of contact, divided into 20 hours of seminars and 113 hours of internship. Four weeks to be dedicated to the specialty of General Surgery and one for the following surgical specialties: Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Stomatology.

 Log book. To record data on pedagogical modalities, clinical histories, clinical notes and acquired skills.

Eligibility for exams

Frequency depends on a positive qualitative assessment, awarded if cumulatively meets the following conditions: attendance ≥90% of predicted for seminars and internship; to make at least 4 clinical histories (one each wek of General Surgery) and 20 clinical notes (five on each week of General Surgery); for competences, (0 to 100 points) obtaining at least 70 points in General Surgery.

Calculation formula of final grade

In the quantitative evaluation it is valued (0 to 20 points): knowledge and attitudes (0 to 6 points), clinical performance (0 to 8 points) and commitment to learning (0 to 6 points), according to the formula = 4xA + B /5 (A-General Surgery, B- evaluation of the specialties).
If the assessment is ≥ 18.5 points and if the student wishes to do so, he/she must register at the DCF Secretariat in order to hold the classification (with no minimum assurance).
