Objectives
1. To consolidate the learning of normal mitochondrial physiology
2. To understand the key molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction
3. To understand how to use the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction for diagnosing concrete clinical situations, namely degenerative and neoplastic diseases.
4. To understand how to use the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in the aging process and in its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases.
5. To learn how to use the molecular diagnosis of mitochondrial disorders in the development of new therapies.
Learning outcomes and competences
The syllabus includes topics that allow the understanding the origin, structure and morphology, biogenesis regulation and the mitochondrial function, as well as the integration of mitochondrial metabolism in the context of cellular metabolism. In addition, the program will allow the understanding of the pathogenesis of mitochondrial diseases and their relationship with aging and cancer, and the identification of the molecular alterations that may be used as therapeutic targets.
