Objectives

To increase knowledge and develop skills in dietary methodologies and determinants relevant for Public Health.

To develop students' skills for the planning and development of community interventions in Public Health Nutrition.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course the student should be able: a) to understand the relationship between nutrition and health and the concept of nutrition transition; b) to be able to interpret the evidence between nutrition and health, and perform a critical appraisal on that; c) to characterize the methods of assessing the nutritional status of populations and to be able to select the best method to address the objective under study; d) to describe the food/nutrition context and the major current public health problems and their implications in health indicators; e) to know specific aspects related with food/nutrition and the methodology used to evaluate them in different periods of life; f) to gain skills for planning and implementing community interventions in Nutrition.

History, concepts and principles: Health and Public Health, evolution and relation with Nutrition, the Nutrition Transition. Methods in nutritional epidemiology, methods of assessment of nutritional status and dietary intake. Determinants of food consumption. Diet in different periods of life (pregnant women, children, adolescents). Diet, Health and Disease: Food-borne Diseases, Diet and Chronic Diseases. Community Nutrition: Dietary context in Portugal, Nutrition Education, Planning and Programming in Community Nutrition.
