Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge, aptitudes and attitudes which enable evaluation and therapeutical orientation of common wounds.:

Knowledge of the tissue healing process;

General principles of wound treatment;

Guidelines for common wound management

Referral criteria for complex wounds.

Learning outcomes and competences

In this optional curricular unit (wound treatment), the students will develop knowledge, skills and competences which will enable a clinical practice for the primary care physician. The learning objectives are adapted to the programmatic contents with particular emphasis on clinical and nursing practice as well as referral to different specialties (Plastic Surgery, vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopedics and Endocrinology, Geriatrics medical, Nursing, etc.) and multidisciplinary consultation.

Basic principles of tissue healing

Sterility, aseptic technique, priorities in wound management

Sedation, analgesia, local anesthesia

Basic surgical instruments

Bleeding control

Suture principles

Wound dressings

Follow up – basic principles (positioning, immobilization, bath, physical activities, traveling, drain removal, suture removal)

Scars and keloids

Referral criteria for wounds

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methodology aims to integrate students in clinical practice in multidisciplinary consultation (diabetic foot), Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Plastic Surgery at the hospital in view of a coherent and integrated approach to clinical problem wounds as well as a multidisciplinary activity (interacted simultaneously various specialties) and clinical cases to referral.
