Objectives
During the academic course students of Medicine, it is crucial to acquire knowledge on diagnosc competences and
treatment planning of Psychiatric disorders and to be able to evaluate the abnormal and / or deviant human behavior
as well as the emoonal / affecve pathology. In a holisc perspecve, it is also important to be aware of different
somac expressions of the mental disorders and psychological reacon to severe physical illness.
The classes combine different teaching methods, such as theorecal, theorecal-praccal (seminars) and tutorial
guidance (praccal teaching), which allows students to have a more direct contact with mental illness, more acve
parcipaon and an integrated understanding of theorecal knowledge.
Furthermore, students will be involved in various diagnosc and treatment environments such as hospitalizaon, day
hospital, outpaent clinic, emergency service, consulng and residences, which are incorporated in different funconal
units (Adult and Elderly Psychiatry, Youth and Family Psychiatry, Community Psychiatry and Day Hospital; Liaison
Psychiatry).
Learning outcomes and competences
According to students’ answers to the assessment quesonnaire and the analysis of students’ final classificaon in this
Curricular Unit, we can a4est that results are very posive. Another indicator of this evidence is the large number of
students who choose Psychiatry as the area where they intend to develop their Master's thesis.
The early recognion of certain mental illnesses is extremely important since it enables a prompt referral and a be4er
and more adequate planning treatment.
This Curricular Unit also allows the development of skills concerning a primary approach to main issues of mental illness
and trains students for future clinical pracce.

Eligibility for exams
In addition to the classification obtained in the final exam, all students will be evaluated for their residency in the Department of Psychiatry of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health of FMUP, and to value attendance.
- 40 multiple choice question
- 40 minutes – time limit
Calculation formula of final grade
Objecve evaluaon by final test (mulple choice test) - total 95% (= 19 values in 20)
Attendance - total 5% (= 1 value in 20)
(Tutorial Guidance).
Assiduity in OT classes:
9 classes – minimum assiduity (=75%) 0 values
12 classes – 1 added value to the final score of the wri4en test.
Formula: Final test (up to 95% - 19 points) + Attendance to Tutorial Guidance (up to 5% - 1 point).

According to Regulation of the University of Porto.

Observations
9(nine values) is the minimum required score in the final exam.
