Information and decision sciences are, traditionally, supported by two great scientific areas, Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, and so it is expected that the students:
This unit aim to empower the students with the following skills:
After this course unit the students should also develop the adequate skills in order to apply and correctly interpret the studied statistical and informatics methodologies using the appropriate software.
Introduction to biostatistics; introduction to probability and distributions.
Descriptive statistics; data preparation; probability graphical models.
Statistical inference and modelling: confidence intervals; hypothesis testing – parametric and non-parametric; categorical data analysis; correlation; linear regression.
Power analysis and sample size.
Introduction to advanced methods for data analysis and modeling.
Application of statistical analysis to biomedical research.
Bibliographic search and reference management.
Information systems (IS) in healthcare.
Data coding and classification systems.
Electronic clinical records.
Data modeling, creation of databases and queries to databases.
Standardization of data communication, processing of biological signal and image; eHealth and telemedicine.
Basic principles of decision support systems
Organization of information in health: guidelines and algorithms in healthcare.
Theoretical lectures, seminars and practical lessons, with topic discussion (including examples in health), individual and group exercises, and hands-on training on medical scenarios, with proper software.

Distributed evaluation - AD (30%): will focus on the assessment of student participation in the teaching / learning process of the curricular unit during the semester in the practical classes and will be based on the results of one or more practical tests (20% final grade), and in the continuous evaluation by the teacher (s) involved in the teaching / learning process of each student (weighting 10% in the final grade). In order to do this continuous assessment, teachers will take into account the active participation of the students during the practical classes and their involvement in carrying out the exercises and proposed work. The practical test aims to assess the practical skills of bibliographic research, management and analysis of data acquired in the Curricular Unit. To do this, students should use the appropriate software on the computer during the test to answer the practical questions asked. Neither the practical test nor the distributed evaluation is eliminatory (there is no minimum classification necessary to be able to take the final exam)
Final evaluation or theoretical exam - ET (70%): The exam will cover the theoretical content of the curricular unit program consisting of questions of closed, simple and multiple answers, open questions of brief answer, questions of development and / or numerical exercises. In relation to the theoretical examination, only those students who obtain a classification equal or superior to 9.50 values (in 20 values) will be approved.
The final classification of the course unit will be calculated only for the students who obtained the minimum grade in the theoretical exam (9.50 values in 20 values), as follows:
final grade = (AD * 30 + ET * 70) / 100
