Objectives

In the field of Surgery:

- To acquire theoretical knowledge.

- To be able to collect clinical data while exploring digestive diseases

- to put forward proper differential diagnoses and use complementary exams to attain a final diagnosis.

- to develop knowledge and attitudes in order to establish proper contact with patients and other healthcare involved professionals.

- To acquire the knowledge and skills to understand the complexity of digestive pathology treatments and the frequent need for a multidisciplinary, integrative approach, including the postoperative vigilance and post-discharge follow-up.

In the field of Gastroenterology:

To acquire core knowledge in the area.

To learn how to collect clinical information from the history and the objective exam.

To develop diagnostic strategies by appropriate selection of complementary diagnostic aids.

To propose therapies for clinical problems solution.

To maintain a permanent scientific attitude and ethical judgement.

Learning outcomes and competences

By studying the adopted syllabus, observing and studying admitted patients’ clinical cases, accompanying patients in external appointments and attending the emergency and operating rooms, the student will be able to accomplish the curricular unit’s indicated goals.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Students should be able to write a full clinical history, perform physical examination, establish differential diagnoses, and request complementary diagnostic tests.

Benign and malignant oesophagogastroduodenal Pathology.

Benign and malignant liver, biliary tract and pancreas disorders.

Benign and malignant colorectal pathology.

Pathology of the anus and anal canal.

Abdominal Wall.

Emergency surgery.

 

Gastroenterology

Concept.

Gastroesophageal reflux: diagnosis, treatment and complications

Peptic disease (Ds.), Gastritis & HPylori

Altered liver tests: clinical significance and diagnostic

Digestive hemorrhage: Clinical approach.

Viral hepatitis

Inflammatory Bowel Ds.: epidemiology, clinics and therapeutics.

Chronic diarrhea and malabsorption syndrome

Cirrhosis, portal hypertension and complications: Clinical approach.

Functional Digestive syndromes and Proctology

Teaching methods and learning activities

This unit’s teaching methods will comprise:

  1. Lectures – one per week for the duration of the semester, lasting sixty minutes each.
  2. Seminars – one per week for the duration of the semester (minimum nine) lasting 90 minutes each.
  3. Practice sessions – One per week for de duration of the semester, lasting 90 min., including attendance of the emergency, nursery and operating rooms, to be arranged throughout the semester, with each student attending at least one.
  4. Joint session between clinicians and pathologists namely including the Special Pathology Departement.
