Objectives

Acquisition of competences to accomplish the tasks related to semiology, pathology and essential nosologic clinical entities (frequent and/or relevant) to the speciality of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.

Program

• Peripheral occlusive atherosclerotic disease - Clinical Approach, Signs and Symptoms
• Physical examination: palpation of arterial pulses, Hemodynamics - evaluation of pressures and Doppler indices - Understanding acute and chronic critical limb ischemia - Therapeutics.
• Expansive Atherosclerotic disease - Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm - Clinic: Symptoms and signs - objective examination - abdominal palpation, Doppler echocardiography, CT, MRI, and Digital Angiography Seldinger; conventional therapy and endovascular (EVAR).
• Extracranial cerebrovascular disease - Clinical Approach, symptoms and signs - Understanding TIA, laughing and stroke - Definition of carotid stenosis with prophylactic indication for surgery - Endarteriectomy carotid angioplasty and stent placement.
• Value of Doppler echocardiography in noninvasive diagnosis, CT and MRI.
• Chronic venous disease of lower limbs - symptoms and signs.
• Venous Doppler echocardiography and its importance in the diagnosis of venous insufficiency of the lower limbs phlebography.
• Medical therapy and surgical and endovascular venous classical-endolaser and radio.
• Understanding the superficial and deep thrombophlebitis of the limbs. Diagnosis and medical and surgical therapy.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Clinical training, practical sessions and seminars. The clinical training takes place at Angiology and Vascular Surgery Department at the Hospital de São João, which implies a full integration in the assistance staff and it’s developed in the different areas of the Service: Wards (daily visits at 8h00), Ambulatory, Operating Theatre, Internship and Emergency (once a week). It concerns supervised clinical practice: ratio tutor/students of 1/1 or 1/2. It also includes the participation in the department sessions and collaboration in research activities (lines of research that exist in the Service). The clinical training takes place until 14h00.
The practical Sessions of the Operating Theatre, Seminars and Emergency Room will take place in the morning with the exception of the Emergency room, which will take place until 20h00.
