Abstract (EN): We describe an ecosystem developed to foster the creation of high-tech/high-growth ventures through the com- mercialization of technology from Portuguese Universities. A venture-backed accelerator, managed by a nonprofit industry association comprising more than 100 companies, orchestrates the ecosystem. The ecosystem builds on: a collaboration between the industry association, a provider of an educational method, research groups, and business schools, to implement a hands-on course in which teams of researchers and MBA students, mentored by industry executives, identify commercialization opportunities; financial support from pre-seed funds, and access to multiple relevant resources, such as incubation and expertise in intellectual property and regulatory issues; managerial expertise and access to market and operations information, provided by associate companies, for the development of business cases to be presented to investors. We report on the development and outcomes of this ecosystem, and discuss associated issues related to education and university-industry collaboration for innovation and entrepreneurship.
