Healthcare-associated infections are a major problem today, not only because of their direct impact on patient morbidity and mortality, but also because of the major socio-economic impact they have. As they are potentially preventable, knowledge of the etiopathogenesis and resistance pattern of the agents of these infections in different clinical contexts will certainly help to plan the best safety, prophylaxis and treatment strategies.
By using illustrative clinical cases, the course will allow knowledge to be consolidated in an interactive and multidisciplinary way, with discussions led by professionals of nationally and internationally recognized quality. This promotion of the transfer of knowledge between different health professionals, with appropriate scientific-pedagogical content, is part of the University of Porto's mission, especially as it will directly serve the communities in which these professionals will apply the knowledge acquired.
The aim of this course is to prepare students in their knowledge of the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections, relating the etiology of these infections to the different clinical situations in which they occur. It will also provide information on the new diagnostic methods on the market so that students can keep up to date with the evolution of microbial resistance profiles. The clinical cases aim to promote the integration of knowledge through the sharing of multidisciplinary knowledge.
