The Doctoral Programme in Human Sexuality (PDSH) promotes advanced knowledge and research development in an area of central relevance to biopsychosocial well-being and health. It is the first doctorate of this nature in Europe and one of the few at an international level. The creation of this programme aims to fill the gaps resulting from the scarcity of specialised advanced training in this area. It is a partnership between the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences (FPCEUP), the Faculty of Medicine (FMUP) and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the University of Porto. It brings together researchers and teachers specialised in the area of sexuality from research centres (CPUP, CIIE, EPIUnit, UMIB). It promotes high quality advanced training with the establishment of strategic international partnerships, and with the ultimate goal of establishing an international centre of excellence in the field of sexuality.
The programme integrates, besides the individual thesis, a curricular component strongly oriented towards the development of research skills and quality scientific production, integrating a set of Curricular Units that support the development work of the thesis and simultaneously contribute to promote the scientific production of doctoral students with special emphasis on the publication of articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals of international circulation.
The PDSH is geared towards hosting students with strong research interests in topics related to Sexuality, and is particularly aimed at:
Promoting the development of a set of knowledge and skills at the levels of theory, research and intervention in the field of human sexuality and gender and sexualities, as well as stimulating the development of original research of high quality and with potential international impact, the programme prepares its doctoral students for the development and/or optimisation of a professional career in various areas: Scientific Research, Teaching in Higher Education; Integration into NGO Staff, Educational and Community Intervention Projects, Sexual Rights and Gender Diversity; Service Provision in the Area of Clinical Sexology, Sexual and Reproductive Health, or Sexual Medicine.
