Epigenetics and Epigenomics
Epigenetics is an exciting new area in biomedical research, with important clinical implications. The increasing evidence that the development and progression of metabolic disease, particularly obesity, diabetes and cancer, are significantly associated with epigenetic changes, largely justify the creation of the current post-graduation course. In addition, there is a lack of postgraduate courses in this innovative and fundamental area for health research.
Objectives
Professional Abilities
At the end of the course the students should be able to:
a) describe the molecular basis of epigenetics & roles during development and disease;
b) give examples of environmentally induced effects on the epigenome;
c) understand the mechanisms that underpin epigenetic programming of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer and other disorders;
d) provide a conceptual framework by which nutrients signal to chromatin & alter cellular metabolism;
e) describe recent advances in epigenetic technologies;
f) design & execute experiments aimed at detecting & quantifying epigenetic marks at loci involved in metabolic regulation;
g) pose research questions, design experiments & critically discuss outcomes.Information
Teaching language:
In Portuguese and partially in English (if there is a foreign language candidate, the course will be taught in English).
Number of participants: 12 (max)/6 (min).
Target audience:
Students of 2nd and 3rd study cycles of the U. Porto, researchers, professors and technicians of professional domains related to health and life sciences.
Admission criteria:
Graduation or integrated master’s degree in medicine, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and related areas.Criteria for the selection and ranking of candidates and their respective weights:
Candidates will be selected according to the conditions of access mentioned above and ranked after curriculum analysis, based on professional experience (1 point per year of professional experience) and academic degree (Master's degree: 3 points; Bachelor Degree: 1 point)
Ties between any two, or more, ranked candidates will be decided by the simple rule of number of years of relevant professional experience
