Objetivos

O plano disciplinar propõe-se alcançar os seguintes objetivos:
• reconhecer, alargar e aprofundar temas e conceitos teóricos pertinentes para o estudo da cultura da Grã-Bretanha em contexto interno e externo;
• desenvolver uma consciência crítica acerca das problemáticas em discussão;
• fornecer às/aos estudantes ferramentas para pesquisa bibliográfica;
• capacitar os/as estudantes para a produção autónoma do saber;
• identificar e analisar as principais correntes culturais, artísticas e históricas que moldaram a identidade britânica;
• compreender as relações entre a cultura britânica e os contextos sociais, políticos e económicos ao longo da sua história;
• promover a reflexão sobre o impacto global da cultura britânica e o seu papel em questões de colonialismo, pós-colonialismo e globalização;
• incentivar a análise crítica de textos, filmes, música, e outras formas de expressão cultural da Grã-Bretanha;
• fomentar a capacidade de interpretar e comparar representações culturais da Grã-Bretanha em diferentes épocas e géneros;
• desenvolver competências interculturais através do estudo das interações entre a Grã-Bretanha e outras culturas.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Pelo final to semestre os estudantes deverão revelar familiaridade com os conteúdos do programa e evidenciar a consecução de pelo menos alguns dos objetivos acima enunciados.

Meridiano de Greenwich – A Inglaterra como Núcleo Cultural (séculos XVIII a XXI)

Krishan Kumar fala frequentemente dos “Momentos de Englishness”. Esta unidade curricular partirá dos famosos ensaios de Orwell sobre o tema, concentrando-se em alguns momentos contemporâneos em que os conceitos de Englishness e Britishness foram particularmente relevantes na complexa busca por definição e se tornaram objeto de debate cultural. Para cada momento selecionado, será dada atenção tanto a textos literários convencionais quanto a artefactos culturais considerados populares (incluindo ficção policial, romance histórico, memórias, cinema e literatura infantil):

1. Englishness e a Revolução Francesa e Guerras Napoleónicas
Debate inglês sobre a Revolução Francesa e comparação com a Revolução Gloriosa de 1688.
O Iluminismo na Grã-Bretanha. O papel da Grã-Bretanha em conter o avanço napoleónico na Europa.

A cadeira funciona em regime de seminário, contabilizando itens como apresentações orais com base em tarefas de investigação, participação em debates e um teste final escrito.

Os estudantes deverão estar presentes em setenta e cinco por cento das sessões previstas.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

O teste final terá a valoração de 70% por cento. A cooperação nas aulas corresponderá a 30%.

Estudantes com estatuto especial (designadamente dirigentes estudantis, estudantes atletas, bombeiros, militares, atletas da selecção nacional, praticantes de desporto de alto rendimento ou trabalhadores-estudantes), no caso de não poderem garantir a frequência das aulas, deverão, no entanto, assegurar a sua regular participação nas tarefas propostas na plataforma Moodle.
