Bearing this general purpose in mind, CLUP attemps to:

- launch and develop specific research projects;
- publish the results of research;
- organise seminars, conferences, courses and other scientific events;
- ensure the continuity of on-going research activities and to broaden the areas covered by the unit, namely through cooperation with other research units;

Description: The Centre of Linguistics of the University of Porto (CLUP) was founded in 1976. Its initial mentors were Professor Óscar Lopes and a group of teaching assistants of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP). It aimed then at supporting the teaching of Linguistics at the University of Porto and to contribute to the development of scientific research in this area at this University. Since 1994, CLUP has been part of the national network of the research and development units funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Unit Nr 22). Between its foundation and the integration in this national network of science, CLUP had been funded as an independent research centre by the Instituto Nacional de Investigação Científica and the Junta Nacional para a Investigação Científica e Tecnológica.

Currently, CLUP comprehends more than 70 researchers and collaborators. Part of its permanent researchers teach at FLUP. Many of our members are students and junior researchers, some of them benefitting from FCT grants and scholarships. CLUP's collaborators belong mostly to other research units and Universities and, in certain cases, they are envolved with some specific research projects in cooperation with CLUP members.

The main topics of the research led within CLUP are: Semantics; Syntax; Phonology; Lexicon; Text and Discourse; Speciality Communication; Translation;  Computational Linguistics; History of Grammar; Psycholinguistics.

CLUP organises conferences, seminars, lectures and other scientific events on a regular basis and is the regular publisher of several materials, namely two Linguistics journals: Linguística. Revista de Estudos Linguísticos da Universidade do Porto (http://ler.letras.up.pt/site/default.aspx?qry=id04id191&sum=sim) and eLingUp. A students' e-journal of Linguistics from the University of Porto (http://cl.up.pt/elingup).

CLUP's administration is the responsibility of:
General Council - formed by all members of the unit;
Scientific Council - formed by all members holding a PhD degree;
Executive Board - formed by 4 elected members of the unit; one of them is the Scientific Coordinator.
