Objectives

Nowadays, a simple knowledge of word-processing, email and basic knowledge of the Internet is manifestly inadequate for university studies today. Therefore, the student needs to become familiar with the hardware and software that are essential for the language services provider.
This includes the need to be aware of the needs of desktop publishing, including multimedia. It is also essential that the students should learn how to use the immense amount of information available on the Internet and via other electronic sources of information. This course aims to offer a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art in these areas.
The course will also include an introduction to sub-titling and to the translation software programme SDLX, and it is hope that these programmes will be used in other translation disciplines.

Program

It must not be forgotten that information technology evolves at such a rate that each year the programmes is adapted to match what is available and the preparation that the students receive in the schools. For this year, the programme will include the following:
-The personal computer + printer + scanner + use of the Internet and the Intranet of FLUP
-Windows XP XP
-Microsoft Office 2000 - Word, Excel, Power Point, Front Page
-Communication and transfer of computerised data
-Resources for translation on the Internet, CD-ROMs and other tools
-Introduction to sub-titling
- Introduction to Machine-assisted translation
- Translation software SDLX
