Objectives

1. To delimit Civic Humanism in the Renaissance within its chronological scope, ideological concerns and cultural practices;
2. To broadly approach the major themes of Renaissance Humanism;
3. To acquaint students with the major names in European Renaissance Humanism and their works, through anthological texts.

Program

1. From «civic» Humanism to «Studia Humanitatis».
2. The «discovery» of the Antiquities: rare artifacts, ruins and texts:
2.1. The «new» archaeology;
2.2. The «new» library;
2.3. From the De vita solitaria to the otium of the studiolo.
3. Literary texts and Art interpretations.
