Objectives

The aims of this subject are the following: 1. to improve and broaden students’ knowledge of Syntax, in particular of some types of complex sentences; 2. to learn new ways of looking at semantic aspects of languages taking into account the shift from word-level to sentence-level and discourse-level.

Program

I. The Noun and the Noun Phrase
1. Proper nouns and common nouns. Semantic types of nouns.
2. Nominal reference and nominal quantification.
3. Some observations about genericity.
4. The noun phrase syntactic structure.

II. Subordination
1. Relative clauses: syntactic and semantic characterization.
1.1. Restrictive relative clauses.
1.2. NP and sentence appositive relative clauses.
1.3. Free relatives.
2. Completive sentences
2.1. Completive sentences selected by noun, adjective and verb.
2.2. Finite completive sentences in subject and complement positions.
2.3. Mood selection in finite completive sentences.
2.4. Non finite completive sentences.
2.5. Inflectional Infinitive.
2.6. Tense selection in completive sentences.

III. Coordination
1. Nuclear, phrasal and sentence coordination.
2. Syndetic and assindectic coordination.
3. Binary and multiple coordination.
