Objectives
Assuming that students have a good grasp of the main characteristics of Portuguese in terms of morphology, lexicon and syntax, the subject Portuguese Language II intends to analyze some semantic, pragmatic and discursive aspects of Portuguese, providing students with the essential tools for text analysis, both in Portuguese and from a translator’s perspective.

1. From word- to sentence-level: some semantic aspects in Portuguese:
1.1 Aspectual types of verbal predicates
1.2. Some issues of aspect and time
1.3. Meaning and reference of nominal expressions
2. Issues of the use of language:
2.1. Illocutionary acts
2.2. Dimensions of the implicit: presupposition, strict implication, conversational implicatures
3. From sentence- to text-level: textual cohesion devices:
3.1. Sentence linking
3.2. Lexical cohesion
3.3. Co-reference and anaphora

Alternatively, optional test counting for 50% and the second part of the final exam counting for 50%.
