Objectives

Resuming the presentation of the major figures in Italian literature, in the second semester, students will be introduced to the work of two poets: Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and Giacomo Leopardi’s “Canti” (14th and 18th centuries)

I – “La Divina Commedia” by Dante Alighieri

1 – Composition of “La Divina Commedia”

1.2. – The body of the universe.
1.3. – Senses, motifs and symbols of the Commedia subordinate to poetry.
1.4. – Guide to the themes in the Commedia.

2 – Hell

5 – The poetry of the “Commedia”
5.1. – Indigent relationship between the composition and the episodes.
5.2. – Poetic unity of the “Commedia”.
5.3. – Representation of doctrines, theology and allegory.
5.4. - Authority of the Dantesque word.

5.6. – Composition and stage direction.
5.7. – Serenity in Dante’s fantasy.
