Objectives

1. To draw an evolutionary overview of 16th and 17th century Portuguese literary narrative;
2. To provide further grounding in the literary innovations introduced by Bernardim’s narrative regarding common practices within the context of Iberian chivalric and sentimental literature;
3. To accompany the evolution of the pastoral genre in Portuguese prose literature, relating Francisco Rodrigues Lobo’s Primavera to the Italian and Iberian sources of the bucolic novella.
4. To approach and shed light on the genealogical source(s) and cultural meaning of Fernão Mendes Pinto’s narrative.

Program

1. Renewal of narrative practices in the mid 16th-century: from the knight to the sentimental lover. Critical reading of the chivalric adventure.
1.1. Bernardim Ribeiro and História de Menina e Moça (1554).
1.2. The textual issue; from the issue of genre to the issue of meaning.
1.3. From the chivalric narrative to the fiction of the sentimental courtly novella.

2. Fiction and books on shepherds.
2.1 The pastoral novella: its projection in the 17th-century.
2.2. Francisco Rodrigues Lobo and Primavera (1601).

3. Travel literature and actuality prose; historiographic discourse and factual narrative.
3.1. Fernão Mendes Pinto, Peregrinação (1614). recipients and readers; the issue of the work’s message.
3.2. Autobiography and adventure narrative; «adtestatio rei uisae»: the basis for persuasion; veracity and «exoticism».
