Objectives

To acquaint students with linguistic analysis techniques and concepts used in phonology and morphology. To provide students with a profound understanding of Portuguese morphology and phonology.

Program

1 – Segmental aspects of Portuguese phonology.
1.1 – Segmental inventory.
1.2 – Segmental distribution patterns in Portuguese.
1.3 – Some specific issues of Portuguese segmental inventory.
1.3.1 – “Nasal vowels”.
1.3.2 – Semi-vowels and diphthongs.
1.3.3 – Tonic vocalism vs. atonic vocalism.
1.3.4 – Trills.

2 – Organization of distinctive features in Portuguese.
2.1 – Phonological features, natural classes, rules and processes.
2.2 – Portuguese phonological system.
2.3 – Redundancy, sub-specification and geometry of features in Portuguese.

3 – Prosodic aspects of Portuguese phonology.
3.1 – Syllabic structures in Portuguese.
3.2 – Word stress in Portuguese.
3.3 – Syntactic structuring and prosodic structuring of a sentence.

4 – Morphological aspects of Portuguese: interaction between phonology and morphology.
4.1 – Internal structure of the word in Portuguese.
4.2 – Lexical forms and grammatical forms.
4.3 – Verbal inflection.
4.4 – Nominal inflection.
4.5 – Derivational processes in Portuguese.
4.6 – Compositional processes in Portuguese.
4.7 – Most common allomorphic variations in Portuguese.
