Objectives

By providing objective facts, reliable effective schemes, contextualizing overviews and frameworks, it is this subject’s aim to acquaint students with exact information so as to engage them in reflection and critical discussion on the major collective moments, cultural agents, topics and issues experienced in 20th-century Portuguese society, in order to lead them to a fresh understanding of the present time and of cultural self-awareness, that emerged from the 25th of April 1974.

Program

1. From the Republic’s propaganda to the exercise of power: programmes, political confrontations, political parties and statesmen. “Memórias” by José Relvas.

2. Messianism, authoritarianism and "Caudillism" and Republican culture. Sidónio Pais, «History and Myth».

3.
a. History and national identity. Teixeira de Pascoaes and the definition of the Portuguese «soul» and Renaissance.
b. The renewal of historiographic studies during the First Republic. Jaime Cortesão and the historiography of the Discoveries.
c. Writing and «deconstruction» of History in the battle of ideas. António Sardinha and António Sérgio.

4. The Portuguese intellectuals and artists within the context of the political difficulties of the 1920's. Diversity of options, ideo-political and aesthetic groups, manifests and controversies. The younger generations, the post-war conditions and the «desertion» of the Republic. The trajectory of António Ferro.

5. The 28th of May and the genesis of Salazar's regime. Doctrinarian fundaments of the Corporate State. Art, literature and science as «facades of a nationality»: initiatives and legacy of the Secretariat for National Propaganda. On a contextualized reading of the Regime's great exhibitions.

Theoretical classes and practical classes. Explanatory and inductive methods, through the analysis and study of significant texts and “documents of the time” brought to class, by means of audiovisual aids (documentary films, slides and transparencies).
