Objectives

The aims of this subject are the following: 1. to acquire new knowledge and new methods in Syntax and Lexical Semantics, taking into consideration European Portuguese and also some of its varieties; 2. to acquire capabilities in linguistic observation based on theoretical proposals; 3. to learn rigorous methods of linguistic analysis by tests and exercises.

Program

I. General Issues
1. Knowledge of Language and use of Language: the Grammar as a linguistic knowledge representation model.
2. Language as object and as meta-language
3. Syntax and Semantics: aims and methods of analysis. The data selection.


II. Syntactic Basic Notions
1. Constituent structure and syntactic categories.
2. Nuclear categories and phrasal categories.
3. Syntactic functions: criteria and identification tests.
4. Word order patterns; Portuguese as a SVO language; sentence types.


III Syntactic and Semantic Aspects of the Simple Sentence
1. The Lexicon contribution: the verb as the sentence major category.
1.1. The verb: category selection and semantic selection.
1.2. Verb types and relational patterns: full verbs, auxiliary verbs, semi-auxiliary verbs, copulative verbs and light verbs.
1.3. The Predication: semantic characterization of verbal predicates.
1.4. Situation typology and aspectual classes of predicates.
1.5. The sentence aspectual composition.
1.6. Time as a deictic category: the tenses and time adverbials contribution.

2. Some constructions involving change of argument position or number of arguments
2.1. The subject inversion.
2.2. The partial interrogatives.
2.3. The passive: classical and se passive.
2.4. Impersonal or ‘nominative’ se.
2.5. The causative/anti-causative alternation and the ergative (inacusative or anti-causative) se.
3. Varieties of Portuguese: some observations on some syntactic and semantic differences.
