Objectives

An understanding of philosophical research in the political and social spheres. Analysis and interpretation of texts by the authors studied. Recognition of the importance and contemporeity of the themes focused.

Program

I. Introduction to the subject: political philosophy and ideologies, politics and religion; politics and economy.
1. Fundamental operative concepts: freedom, justice, power and State.
2. Factors and manifestations of political struggle.
3. Justifications of the State, types of State and their fundamental structure.

II. The Greek city-state and the genesis of political thought.
1. The Sophists, Plato and Aristotle.
2. The opposition between nature and law.
3. The relationships between ethics and politics.
4. Binomial knowledge – power.
5. Identification of the different political regimes.
6. The discovery of democracy.
7. Political utopia: the real State and the ideal State.
8. Mixed constitution and relativism of political ideals.
9. Hellenism: the Stoic and Epicurean schools.
10. The individual, friendship and cosmopolitism.

III. Christianity and the Middle Ages.
1. The statute of political philosophy in terms of the relationships between spiritual and temporal powers.
2. St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas.
3. The theology of history.
4. The Christian view of Man and State.

IV. The birth of Modernity.
1. Machiavelli, Erasmus, Moore and Hobbes.
2. The Republican ideal and the State as the absolute foundation.
3. The autonomy of politics with regard to morals.
4. Christian humanism.
5. The pacifist ideal.
6. Utopia as a political method.
7. The affirmation of civil power.
8. State and sovereignty.
9. Foundations of natural right and theories of contract.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Explanatory theoretical and practical classes; reading of and debates on the texts analysed with the students. Supervision of assignments on the matters studied, whenever the students show interest in further research.
