Objectives

Deepening the thesis project, based on the work developed in the 1st semester: precise definition of the theme, identification of starting questions, careful bibliographical survey and construction of the project plan. In addition, it identifies the expected difficulties and prepares the investigation schedule. The student must develop the 1st version of the conceptual component of their project and identify the methods and techniques to be used, given the research objectives.
Simultaneously, with his fellow students, he prepares the scientific meeting at the end of the semester, aimed at doctoral students. In this context, you must also present your project.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester, the student will have to defend their project in a public exam. In this test, you must demonstrate the state of development of your research, especially considering the theoretical and methodological dimensions.

Program

As a research orientation seminar, there is no syllabus. The themes for discussion and reflection and the respective sequence will be defined by the professors and supervisors, depending on the research interests of the PhD students and responding to the objectives of this UC. The specific needs of each student will be taken into account.
Students will prepare a cycle of conferences, with external guests, focused on relevant topics of geography. A doctoral workshop will also be developed, aimed at all PhD students (1st, 2nd and 3rd year).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Through regular meetings with their scientific advisor(s), the doctoral student develops his thesis project: defines the theme more precisely, better identifies the starting points, conducts a careful bibliographic survey and builds a project plan . In addition, it identifies the expected difficulties and draws up an investigation timetable. Students are expected to develop the 1st version of the conceptual component of their project, systematize the methods and techniques to be developed and structure the tasks to be developed in a schedule.
Students must simultaneously organize a cycle of conferences, in order to reinforce research networks and develop other skills.
