Objectives

Starting from the historical roots of ethical and political thought in Portugal, provide a broad knowledge about some of the most decisive social and political orientations in the social and political construction of Portugal.

Students should reach an increasing level of critical thinking autonomy.

Learning outcomes and competences

This degree implies a consolidated scientific training and good practice research techniques. The link between the program and objectives, seek to deepen these techniques and skills, aimed at consolidating this training, seeking to stimulate an autonomous research route and grounded.

1. General presentation of the UC; General outline of an ethical-political reflection.
2. Historical roots of ethical and political thought in Portugal: from the foundation of nationality to the Renaissance.
3. From overseas expansion to the 17th century.
4. From the 18th century to the First Republic.
5. Social and political perspectives in Portugal in the first quarter of the 20th century; 5.1. Positivism and anti-positivism; 5.2. From the editorial section of the magazine "A Águia" to the movement of the "Portuguese Renaissance"; 5.3. The "Seara Nova" movement.
6. Dictatorship and "Estado Novo"; 6.1. Colonialism.
7. Portugal - European, Atlantic and Lusophone dimensions.
