Objectives

The main objectives of the course are to:

- Reflect on critical language areas of non-native speakers of Portuguese;
- Understand language as a means of social interaction and individuals' identity in their interactions and relationship with their environment;
- Know the Portuguese cultural and society;
- Know the reference documents of the disciplinary field in question;
- To acquaint the participants with with methods and practices for the development of the teaching activity of Portuguese as a non-native language.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

- use the acquired scientific knowledge;
- select and adapt scientific and background knowledge to the students learning needs, stages, and and learning rhythms;
- critically evaluate teaching materials and activities planning;
- produce teaching materials and plan activities;
- write a final theoretical-practical report on a topic covered in one of the course modules.

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Preference will be given in selecting candidates to:

- Teachers of Portuguese as a foreign language who pursue an update in their professional activity of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language;
- Teachers of Portuguese as L1 who intend who wnat to train as Portuguese as a foreign/second language.

Program

The proposed topics focus globally on the following areas:

Distinct discursive typologies, with relevance to discourse-related issues:

- oral (verbal and non-verbal processes and strategies, among others);
- written (types of discourse, textual genres, language registers, among others);
- media (cultural content and social practices);

Various levels of linguistic analysis:

- lexical-phraseological (combinatorial system, idiomatic structures, lexical relations, among others);
- syntactic (relative clauses, inflected infinitive, among others);
- semantic (tense and aspect, among others);
- phonological (specificities and variations of the phonological system according to geographical, social and cultural factors);

Portuguese Society: political, cultural, social, historical features;

Literature and Culture topics;

Didactic approaches.

References for each of the modules will be provided throughout the sessions by the corresponding teacher.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course has a modular structure and consists of 10 modules.
Each module combines synchronous sessions with asynchronous and individual work.
Synchronous sessions are structured according to two complementary strategies:

- theoretical presentation of the topics by the teacher combined with various techniques of the active method, namely problematization and application of the topics covered;
- practical work centred on guided reflection on the topics covered and classroom practice, together with students' proposals for teaching activities, exercises, and materials.

Asynchronously, students have access to the content and materials provided by the teachers. They also have a set of tasks to carry out to prepare for the contact hours or as a complement of it, both individually and with other students.
This methodology aims at favouring individual and collaborative work, and it also works as guiding the preparation of the final work assessment.
