Objectives
It is intended, at the level of objectives, that students understand and analyze the theoretical and methodological structure of the main field of the sociology of education; analyze education in school and non-school contexts; analyze processes of social change in contemporary educational system; apply the concepts acquired to the analysis of contemporary Portuguese society; discuss the sociologist professional profile in educational contexts.
Learning outcomes and competences
Field of major theoretical and methodological issues of discipline and ability to problem-based framed in research projects.
Critical reflection on the professional profile of the sociologist working in educational contexts.
Ability to theoretical research, scientific reading and writing, oral and written communication.

Teaching methods and learning activities
In theoretical-practical classes, the program is analyzed with theoretical exposition of the themes, empirical illustrations and student participation in its discussion. In tutorial classes, activities such as oral and written presentation of the practical work to be carried out are encouraged; collection and processing of exploratory information, research of bibliographic sources, discussion of theoretical matters based on the students' experiences in the aforementioned work. A set of elements are available on the Moodle platform: complementary bibliography, developed summaries, teaching materials, assessment, discussion forums and tutorial guidance.

Eligibility for exams
The assessment components are:
- 1 writen test
- 1 practical work
All assessment components are compulsory. The delivery of practical work takes place between the last class expected of curricular unit in the 1st hal and the first week of exams, regular season. Failure to perform the individual test at the normal time involves moving the student at the resource time; the non-delivery of practical work on time implies the failure of the student at the curricular unit.
For the purpose of evaluation in resource time, and if students fail the test at the normal time, can undergo a new test at the resource time being maintained the classification obtained in the practical work component.
Calculation formula of final grade
Assessment components:
- 1 writen test - 50%
- 1 practical work - 50% (35% for the final writen version and 15% for the oral presentation of ongoing version)
It is considered approved in the curricular unit the student who obtains a final grade equal or superior to 10, bearing in mind that:
- the classification obtained in the written exam should be equal to or higher than 10;
- the marks obtained in the practical work should be equal to or higher than 10.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students who, under the law, and according to the Evaluation Rules of FLUP, are exempt from class attendance, must necessarily carry out the following evaluation components: writen test (50%) and practical work (50%).
Classification improvement
The student may require improvement of classification according to the Evaluation Rules of FLUP. Classification improvement focuses on the writen test and on the practical work. It keeps the weighting given to each of these components of evaluation and the conditions for approving the course.

The teacher will display at the beginning of the classes the opening hours for students.
