Objectives

This curricular unit gives continuity to the work the students carried out in General Translation I. It aims at providing students with opportunities for the acquisition of similar competencies, although with a higher level of development, and offering them a working environment that simulates that of a professional translator; its nature is fundamentally practical and mainly aims at: 



1) enhancing students’ awareness of the many demands and difficulties translators come up against in their working sphere; 
2) consolidating students’ familiarisation with available translation tools;
3) consolidating students’ knowledge of basic translating techniques, giving them the opportunity to exercise these by discussing and translating a wide variety of text types; 
4) fostering an attentive and critical attitude towards the translation work, be it the product of individual or collaborative efforts;
5) fostering the production of texts in clear and accurate Portuguese.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester, students are expected to have consolidated their knowledge of basic translating techniques and to be able to translate non-specialised texts.

Good knowledge of working languages (Portuguese and English)

Program

1. Different types of language, different registers and different forms of translating according to the text type and target audience. Discussing the particularities of the translation market.

2. Strategies used by the translator to solve linguistic and grammar difficulties. 


3. Working tools: using the Internet to select trustworthy and pertinent information; research activities in different domains;


4. Proofreading and revision work: the several stages of a revision process. Discussing linguistic issues key to the translator's work. Revision and post-editing exercises.


5. Introduction to the specialised translation: translation work (in groups) of texts from different fields, requiring some technical vocabulary, but with a low difficulty level. 

6. Specialised translation areas: discussion with guest lecturers.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching methodology:

Practical exercises; presentation of a plan, at the beginning of the semester, with all the translation tasks to be performed by the students individually, in pairs and in groups. All the work submitted by students will be managed through Moodle.

Evaluation:

The evaluation will be based on the following elements:

1. Attendance and participation in class, delivering individual and group assignments in due time – 40%

2. Delivery and presentation of a project - 20%

3. 2 Written tests: midterm (20%) and final test (20%)

 

Evaluation will be “distributed”; the option of a final exam will not be offered.
