Objectives

1. To acquaint students with basic knowledge and new methods in syntactic and semantics analysis, particularly on European Portuguese.
2. To promote in students the ability to reflect about syntatic and semantic problems.

Learning outcomes and competences

1. Knowledge of basic notions in syntax and semantics.
2. General capacity of linguistic reflection based on some theoretical proposals.
3. Implementation of rigorous methods in linguistic analysis by application of tests.
4. Capability of identifying problems.

I.General notions 
1.Knowledge of language and use of language: grammar as a model of representation of linguistic knowledge.
2.Language as object and metalanguage.
3.Syntax and Semantics: object and methods of analysis. 

II.Syntactic basic notions
1.Constituents structure and syntactic categories. 
2.Basic categories and phrase categories.
3.Syntactic functions: criteria and identification tests.
4.Word order. Portuguese as a SVO language; types of sentences. 

III. Semantic basic notions
1. Analytical, synthetic and contradictory sentences.
2. Sense and reference.
3. Predicates and referential expressions.
4. Semantic functions.

IV. Syntax and semantics of simple sentences
1.The lexicon contribution: the verbal category. 
1.1.The verb: categorical and semantic selection. 
1.2. Types of verbs: full verbs, auxiliary verbs, semi-auxiliary verbs, copulative verbs and light verbs. 
1.3.Predication: semantic characterization of verbal predicates
1.4.Aspectual classes.
1.5.Tense: reference point and temporal values.

Calculation formula of final grade

Two tests throughout the semester counting 50% each. Students must obtain 9,5 or more in each test. In the special cases in which the student only does final exam: 100%.
